Welcome to the Economics Department

What is economics about?
Even if you don't intend to study economics as part of your career plan it can help you to be a better informed member of society.  This is because economics is everywhere as it involves everything that you do.  Studying it makes you more aware of the decisions that are made each day that affect you, society, the country and the whole world.
This is because we all have to make the best choice about how to use our time, our energy and our resources.  But how does society as a whole make choices?  Who decides what we should make, what we should use up and what we should save?  How do we decide who will get a share of what is produced?  Economics examines these issues.

What career paths are linked to economics?

Because economics is an approach to decision making that is valuable throughout the ordinary business of life, people who have studied economics are not often in positions titled 'economist'.

The subject provides a foundation for careers in:

  •    public policy
  •    education
