Year 13 Science
The Science department welcomes you into our year 13 Science course. We hope you enjoy working and learning with us while exploring the world of Science and developing the skills and attitudes needed to pursue an understanding of the world in which we live.
Year 13 Science Course
The NCEA Level 3 Science course consists of four externally assessed standards one in each of Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Physics. In addition to this there will be two internally assessed standards in astronomy research and an extended investigation.
Assessment Programme
The external units of study will be assessed in an end of topic test and in the term 3 school examination. The Summative assessment for credits will be held during the external examinations in November.
The internally assessed standards will be carried out in class time under examination conditions. There will be no further assessment opportunities for either of these internal assessments.
Reporting
Reports will be issued during the year to indicate student progress through the course. The end of topic tests and school examinations will form the main basis for these reports. Students will also receive information from their teacher during the year on their progress.
Absence from Assessments / Work handed in late
It is compulsory for all students to undertake and complete all of the course assessments and activities. If you are absent for an assessment not counted for credit, you will sit the assessment on your first day back at school.
If you are absent from an internal assessment for credit you need to follow school policy as outlined in the homework diary and obtain a pink slip from your HOH on your first day back at school.
Homework requirement
Homework is an essential part of the learning process and must be completed when set. You should expect to be issued usually with several homework activities per week, each of about 20-30 minutes duration.
Having Difficulties / Queries
If you have any difficulties or queries concerning your studies in Science which your teacher cannot help you with, you may contact the Head of Science.
Head of Science Faculty Mr S Stanning Office in lower S- Block.
We hope you have an enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding year.
