COURSE OUTLINE YEAR 13 DRAMA 2010

 

Welcome to a challenging year in year 13 drama.  This is an NCEA level 3 course with a total of 24 credits.  Standards 3.4 and 3.6 will be assessed externally and can only be sat by those who have achieved highly throughout the year. Those who do not sit these exams will have the opportunity to complete a level 3 Unit Standard.  The remaining standards will be assessed internally.

 

Journal—Weekly

Every week you will reflect on your experiences in class.  You will write 1-2 pages on the week’s activities and your drama ideas about the topic of study.  This is essential material for the two external examinations:  3.4 & 3.6. In order to prepare fully for these externals you will be expected to keep a detailed reflective journal of your years work as well as completing the necessary written work for each standard.

 

TERM ONE

 

WEEKS 1-11 AND TERM 2 WEEK – 1-2  3.5  Research and carry out a performance or technical/production role in a significant production. –Internal 6 credits AS90611 (CI)

As a class we will choose a play to study and perform. You will have the option of performing either an acting or a technical role, such as director, lighting designer and operator, props, set and stage manager. These roles will be negotiated with and auditioned by your teacher. Actors will learn the skills of detailed character development during rehearsals and rehearsal disciplines such as vocal and movement development, line learning techniques, and character development exercises. Students fulfilling technical roles will complete a detailed process including technical meetings, individual research, keeping a portfolio of all ideas and developments, drafts and finals.

 

TERM TWO

WEEKS 3-7   3.2   Interpret scripted text and integrate drama techniques in solo or paired performance. – Internal 5 credits AS90608 (PK)

You will study the voice and develop vocal techniques.  Students will apply these skills to interpret a dramatic text.  You will learn and perform a character monologue or duologue demonstrating the vocal techniques studied.  You will research your character, read the entire play the scene comes from, and use some of Stanislavsky’s method acting techniques. You will also incorporate use of body, space and movement to convey meaning.

 

WEEKS  8-10  & TERM 3  WEEK 1 3.4 – Demonstrate knowledge of theatre form or period by analysing and interpreting two scripted texts. e.g. Political theatre – 4 credits AS90610 (UC) external assessment

You will research a theatre form such as Political drama or New Zealand drama.  You will learn about all aspects of the theatre from this perspective including the playwright’s intention. You will look at the historical, political and social factors relevant to the form. You will analyse the class play, and another play, and write an essay on how you would interpret the two texts for performance. Students will prepare a portfolio of information and reflection for external assessment, and present a seminar on your findings.

STUDENTS NOT SITTING 3.4 and 3.6

WEEKS  8-10  & TERM 3  WEEKS 1, 8+9 & TERM 4 WEEK 1-3 - Demonstrate skills of mime in performance. UNIT 14182. –Version 3 Level 3.  6 Credits

You will be researching a mime artist of your choice and presenting your findings as a

seminar presentation.  You will perform a mime with characteristics from the mime

artist studied and present this as a solo or paired performance. You will be

incorporating a song that helps to develop the meaning of your play in your

performance.

 

 

 

TERM THREE 

 

WEEKS 2-7 TERM THREE– 3.3 – Devise, script and perform drama for solo or paired performance.– Internal  5 credits AS90609 (DI) “Double Exposure”

You will read two plays such as Purapurawhetu and The Pohutukawa Tree. You will then choose an existing character from the play to extend on, as well as a minor or invented character. Using the information you know about the character/s from the play and your own imagination and interpretation you will devise a monologue or paired performance, which you will perform for the class.

 

TERM FOUR

 

WEEKS 8-9  TERM 3 & WEEKS 1-4 TERM 4- 3.6 Analyse drama processes in a new context and reflect critically on drama performance.– external exam 4 credits.   AS90612 (CI,UC)

Although you will be focussing on the examination during this time there will be consistent reference to this throughout the year in order to prepare you to present written essay style responses. We will view Auckland Theatre Company performances during the year, and reflect critically on them.

 

 

STUDENTS DOING UNIT STANDARD 14182 WILL BE ASSESSED IN WEEK 3 OF THIS TERM.
