Here you will find a list of terms and vocabulary that we use through out the Year 10 Drama units of work.


THEATRESPORTS GLOSSARY

ACCEPTING

- using/working /developing/extending another players OFFER.

ADVANCE

- taking an offer further – to the next logical step.

BLOCKING

- not accepting and using another players offer. Saying ‘No’.

EXTENDING

- focusing on one idea and exploring it fully. By extending we get to know characters, objects and environments.

GAGGING

- action done purely for a cheap laugh- Shows lack of commitment

NAMING

- when a location, person or object appears in your story you NAME it out loud so everyone knows exactly where you are, who you are with and what objects you are dealing with.

ENDOWING

- giving another player a name or attribute that must be accepted.

ASK-FOR

- getting a word or suggestion from the audience that players will use in their story.

OFFERS

- a physical or verbal suggestion one player makes to another. A story grows when these offers are accepted and built upon.

JUSTIFICATION

- making action or speech make sense and fit what is happening on stage.

WIMPING

- accepting an offer – but not advancing on it. Taking the easy way out, not advancing the story.

PIMPING

- putting another player in ‘improv danger’ (on the spot) A challenge – great for audience!

MEETINGS AND MOVEMENT: DANCE VOCAB

LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENT - a dance movement that travels from A to B. E.g. walking, running, skipping…

NON-LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENT - a dance movement that is stationary. E.g. jumping on the spot, hitting, slapping, twisting…

LEVELS - use of different heights to make dance more visually interesting. E.g. crawl, stretch, squat, stoop…

SPEED - use of different rhythms in dance. E.g. fast, medium, slow…

ENERGY - the quality and force of a movement in dance. Often used to show moods and emotions. E.g. anger uses strong energy, dream a slow, floating energy.

MOOD ­- the feeling portrayed in dance through different movements, speed and energy. E.g. sadness, happiness, nightmare, loss, discovery…

SELF SPACE - the immediate space around our own bodies.

GENERAL SPACE - all the space around us.

PATHWAYS - a route that movement follows. Whether organised or improvised – all dance follows a pathway.

DIRECTION - the use of different ways in dance. E.g. forwards, backwards, right, left, diagonal…

RELATIONSHIPS - how individuals relate to each other in dance and movement.

CANON - a movement that flows from one dancer to another. Like a Mexican Wave.

UNISON - dancers creating the same movement at the same time as other dancers.

FLOCKING - movement inspired by the pattern of flocks of birds. Groups of dancers moving through a pathway as one. Sensing changes in leader or direction.

Parihaka Vocabulary

PARIHAKA - Maori village built in 1867 in Taranaki

TE WHITI- Maori Prophet – believed that one day Pakeha would leave NZ for the Maori. Initiated campaign of passive resistance.

TOHU - Maori preacher that helped set up passive resistance with Te Whiti.

CONSTABULARY - Police force

BICULTRALISM - combining two distinct cultures (Maori and European)

HUI - Meeting/feast

KUIA - Old woman

MANA- Authority/prestige

MARAE - Meeting house

PA - Village

PAKEHA - White man

PATAKA - Storehouse on posts

RANGATIRA - Chief

TANGI - Funeral/Wake

TAPU - Sacred/taboo

TOHUNGA - Priest

WHARE - House
